Director of Cricket, Jimmy Adams has revealed that a core group of West Indian players are being looked at ahead of the T20 World Cup in Australia next year.
Adams, speaking on the Mason and Guest radio programme recently, disclosed that he does not see why the likes of Chandrapaul Hemraj and Sherfane Rutherford, who were not selected for the upcoming Pakistan tour, would not be part of the core players on their radar.
He said, “Almost immediately after the last World Cup we are now here in the sort of planning phase for October next year when the tournament is going to be repeated in Australia and part of that process going into the tournament is going to be an identification of a core group of players and I would see no reason why some of the players we are discussing here wouldn’t be in that core group of players that we would want to be looking at throughout the process.”
He contended that there is a lot of international matches from now until the next series where players could stake their claims.
“It would be about 25 games…so there is a lot of international T20 cricket and there are youngsters who we think and know are very talented and are going to want to see them involved in this process and once these players are identified,” he reasoned.
The former West Indies captain indicated that players will be briefed on the plans in order to “make sure that they are available going forward.
“So that if there are issues preventing the selection of these players then this is something that we see as a priority because we want to be selecting from a wider pool as possible,” said the former West Indies skipper.
“So while they might not be selected for this tour, the plan is not to be out of sight out of mind. We want to have these players available and ready for international cricket and want to see them coming into the fore in terms of the next generation of T20 players.”
Chairman of Selectors, Roger Harper, said recently that young off-spinner, Kevin Sinclair has not been forgotten.
Among the fresh faces included in the West Indies squad are Odean Smith, Dominic Drakes and Gudakesh Motie while Romario Shepherd, Brandon King and Kyle Mayers are all making a return to the squad.
