A Guyanese fisherman is missing and feared dead after he reportedly fell overboard in Surinamese waters during a scuffle with another fisher last Tuesday.

The missing man is Vibert Bacchus, 33, of Lot 23 Section ‘A’, Number 79 Village, Corentyne.

According to his mother, Waneeta Shivgobin, 53, the fisherman relocated to Paramaribo, Suriname, over two and a half years ago. Shivgobin said that she was only informed on Friday that her son was missing. “Based on what I hear, they had a misunderstanding but then them call a next lady and tell her her son drown but when we hear is na she son is me son,” the frustrated woman said.

After contacting the persons her son was working with in Suriname, Shivgobin was told that her son was engaged in an argument with another fisherman while out at sea and both men supposedly fell overboard during a scuffle “and them say the other guy came up back but my son didn’t came up back.”

Shivgobin was told yesterday that the person who was involved in the scuffle with her son has since been held for questioning in Suriname.

According to her, Bacchus was working to save money to return to Guyana. She added that she is unable to venture to the other country due to limited finances.

As of yesterday afternoon, she was also told that the police in Suriname were continuing to search for her son. “I’m praying for the best. All we can do now is hope and pray for the best,” she added.
