Do those who purport that Cheddi Jagan was culturally lost because he did not practise Hinduism, truly understand the argument they are making? They are basically saying that to be truly Indian, you must be practising Hinduism, or, you are culturally lost. These are hardlined, extremists’ positions on culture. Culture is not static as it is continually evolving. New words are added to languages; new songs are played; new dances are introduced; new festivals or things to celebrate are observed. Indeed, culture is dynamic and changes with time. Albeit, slowly.
