Former national footballer George Green dies

Former national footballer and sports administrator George Green passed away on Saturday after a prolonged illness.

Green was 84.

Green had a distinguished career as a footballer representing not only the national team but a representative West Indies team as well.

He began his career in 1957 playing for Victoria Football Club as a midfielder and in 1958 was a member of the British Guiana team that played against Suriname.

In 1959, he toured England with the inaugural West Indies football team, and at the tender age of 21, was the youngest member of that elite team.

The team comprised players from Trinidad, Jamaica, Barbados and British Guiana.

Locally, he also played for Sandbach Parker FC and his career for British Guiana lasted from 1958-1966.

He also served as coach of the national football team and later worked at the Department of Sport.
