Georgetown was crowned the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Academy Training Centre U13 Challenge Series winner, defeating East Bank Demerara by a 2-0 score-line yesterday in the final at the National Training Centre, Providence.
Vurlon Mills, coach of the victorious Georgetown outfit during a post-match comment said, “I am very much pleased and satisfied with the performance, generally the Georgetown coaches have done well throughout the tournament. We know the game wouldn’t have been a walkover or easy but our players showed fight and determination and we were able to come out victorious.”
He added, “We were able to get the result we were looking for. There were times in the game where we were pressured by the East Bank team but we were able to stay organized as a team and deal with the situation. Eventually we took back control of the game and the players were confident and we created more chances to score.”
A conversion on either side of halftime settled the outcome. Jesus Daniels gave the visitors the lead in the 31st minute from the penalty mark. Tasked with the responsibility from the distance following an infraction inside the area, Daniels made no mistake as he uncorked a left footed strike into the lower right corner.
The result was eventually sealed in the 68th minute when Jamal Fraser found the back of the net. Racing away from the backline after latching onto a through pass down the centre of the field, Fraser, with only the goalkeeper in his path, finished with aplomb into the right side of the net.
With the result, Georgetown walked away with the championship trophy and the respective team medals following the official presentation ceremony. On the other hand, East Bank Demerara was presented with the runners-up medals.
