A week after Veronica Lewis, 78, was killed in a hit-and-run accident on Lamaha Street, police are still to make an arrest.
Lewis of Grove, East Bank Demerara was on Monday, 29th November running errands around Georgetown when she was hit by the motor car which was reported to be white in colour. The licence number of the vehicle is not known.
Lewis was standing on the southern side of the road on Lamaha Street in the vicinity of Waterloo Street. Her son, Michael Lewis, said he was told that his mother was preparing to cross the road and a vehicle on the southern lane stopped to facilitate her. The son said he was told that the driver had cautioned his mom to “be careful how you crossing the road,” which led him to put on his hazard lights to warn the other car which was approaching behind him that someone was crossing. However, the other car continued with the same speed onto the northern lane of the road, struck Lewis and drove away.
Michael said that he was told by police officers that all the cameras in the area were down at the time.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Stan Gouveia, the traffic ranks are still investigating the death.
