A labourer and a fisherman were on Wednesday denied bail after being charged with stealing jewellery amounting to $351,000.
Tyron Wilson, 18, a fisherman of Lot 740 Kaneville, East Bank Demerara, and O-Keeffe Wilson, 22, a labourer of Lot 40 Cross Street, McDoom, Georgetown, were arraigned at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts where Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan read the joint charge to them.
It is alleged that on December 4, at McDoom, Georgetown, while in the company of others and while being armed with a gun, they stole two gold chains, valued $351,000, which were the property of Derrick Bennett.
The men pleaded not guilty and were remanded until December 15 after the Police Prosecutor objected to bail. According to the Police Prosecutor, on the day in question at 17:15 hrs, Bennett was sitting on his verandah with a friend. The two men were drinking when they saw the two accused along with other persons walking in the vicinity of Lot 57 McDoom, Georgetown, where the incident occurred.
Bennett left to purchase drinks at a shop close by and at the time he was wearing the jewellery. The court heard that when the man returned to his residence, he entered the yard and Wilson entered behind him. Another person who was with the alleged robbers entered as well, while McRae remained at the gate. The court heard that the unidentified person held a gun pointed toward Bennett while Wilson removed the articles. The men then escaped and then Bennett made a report of the matter at the Ruimveldt Police Station.
The man also gave a description of the two accused to the police. The men were later arrested and Bennett positively identified them to the police. The Police Prosecutor asked that bail not be granted because a dangerous weapon was used and given the seriousness of the crime.
