A taxi-driver and his passenger, who were arrested at Weldaad Village, West Coast Berbice with almost 300 pounds of ganja, were yesterday charged with possession of narcotics for trafficking.
Emmanuel Luther, 23, a taxi-driver of Lot 41 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, Berbice, and Demarqis Henry, 23, a welder of Lot 858 Fort Ordinance, New Amsterdam, Berbice, were arraigned at the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s Court.
Magistrate Peter Hugh read the charge that on December 5, at Weldaad Village, West Coast Berbice, they had in their possession 134 kilogrammes of cannabis (equivalent to over 295 pounds) for the purpose of trafficking.
The men denied the charge and the case was transferred to the Weldaad Magistrate’s Court to be called today. They were both denied bail.
According to the police’s case, on the day in question ranks from the Guyana Police Force (GPF) were conducting a roadblock at the Weldaad Village Public Road and were tipped off. The ranks then went to the back street at Weldaad Village where they saw a man exit a car. The ranks went to the man who was standing about six feet away from the vehicle and conducted a search. The ranks also searched the car and the driver, the police said. The cannabis was found during the search. The men were told of the allegation and they were arrested.
