Eleven students have been awarded US$1,000 among other prizes for being winners of the Guyana-China Youth Leadership Development Competition.
The secondary school students were awarded during a ceremony held at the National Centre for Educational Resource Development (NCERD) in Kingston, Georgetown, on Friday.
The winning students are: Rahul Chu, of North West Secondary School, Region One; Nanda, of Abram Zuil Secondary School, Region Two; Attoya Harvey, of Uitvlugt Secondary School, Region Three; Allister Henry, of President’s College, Region Four; Ryah Rhoomes, of Rosignol Secondary School, Region Five; Malachi Alexander, of Berbice Educational Institute, Region Six; Odelliea Benjamin, of Bartica Secondary School, Region Seven; Pearson Marcello, of Paramakatoi Secondary School, Region Eight; Allan Fernandes, of Aishalton Secondary School, Region Nine; Lemuel Browne, of Foundation Secondary, Linden, Region Ten; and Xaria Holder of Queen’s College, Georgetown.
In March of this year, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China and the Ministry of Education (MoE) to solidify the cooperation programme.
The ministry was invited by the People’s Republic of China to participate in an annual competition for youth leadership development among secondary schools in the 11 Education Districts.
According to MoE, a total of 115 students from the 11 districts had applied to participate in the competition. Seventy of these students were shortlisted for the award and 44 students eventually completed the event from which the 11 winners were selected.
The participating students were asked to conduct a community survey to ascertain the needs of their community after which they were required to capture the survey in an essay to outline their project, stating how it would be done and how it will benefit their community. Following the judging of these essays, approval was given for the projects to be completed. In addition, the students were required to engage in the critiquing of an artwork relative to their project, engage in a physical fitness challenge, and also prepare an oral or written report to reflect their experiences in participating in the various aspects of the competition.
