Spartans were crowned overall champions of 2021 when the Georgetown Dominoes Association held its final fund-raising event for the year.
Played Thursday last at Strikers Sports Club, Turning Point, Players and Spartans contested the finals of the 17-team tournament.
Top teams such as Mix Up, Alpha Warriors, Masters, All Season Angels, Gangsters, C6, C7, Phanthom, 300, Big Boss Girls, Spartans, Executives, Providence Sports Club, Turning Point, R&R, Players and F&H were in the hunt for season-ending glory but in the end it was Spartans who prevailed.
The event commenced at the Turning Point Sports Club with two rounds.
After the dust settled some six teams remained in the one of a kind quarter-finals which was played at Dynasty Sports Club Monday evening.
Executives, Spartans and Turning Point were pitted in one quarter final while 300, Big Boss Girls and Players competed in the other quarter-final.
In nail biting encounters, Wxecutives and 300 were eliminated by one point each with Turning Point drawing the bye to finals. In a fiercely contested battle which had players and spectators at the edge of their seats, banging on tables, Big Boss Girls were eliminated by one point in what was termed the “finals of the tournament.”
In the real final, Spartans and Players started with 16 games apiece, to Turning Point’s 13. However, Spartans took command from the second sitting and never looked back. At the end of the fifth sitting the scores read, Spartans 73, Players 57 and Turning Point in the cellar with 49.
The final score read Spartans 88 games, Turning Point 65 games and Players 63 games.
Prizes and Trophies were awarded to the top three teams of $165,000, $110,000 and $60,000 respectively while the fourth placed team, Big Boss Girls were awarded $20,000 for their effort. Donations came in the form of trophies and cash from Paul Williams DSM, Big Boss Transportation Services, Spartans Club, Chrisanthony Parasram and members of the GDA Fundraising Committee.
Guyana Dominoes Associatioon president Lyndon Boston in closing remarks thanked all the teams and sponsors for their participation in what was a trying year for the sport.
Boston said that the major challenge was keeping the COVID-19 protocols in place. Nevertheless, he said, the sport prevailed. He also wished the fraternity and their families a season filled with love, joy and happiness.
“As we are about to welcome the new year, bigger and better things in are store for the sport,” said Boston.
He made special mention of the young upcoming Alpha Warriors and welcomed them into the fold.
