Dear Editor,
The rise and ride of the sons and daughters of Guyana in the UK to the top tiers continues. In the New Year’s’ honours list, QC old boy Trevor Phillips, now a born again TV presenter, is awarded a long overdue knighthood. Some in the diaspora have mistakenly thought for years that he had one.
More significantly, Baroness Valerie Amos, now ‘Master’ of University College Oxford has been given a personal honour by the Queen. She is the first woman of colour to be appointed to the Order of the Garter. There are just 21 members of that.
Congrats – as the Guyanese say – to both of them.
Yours,
John ‘Bill Cotton/Reform’ Mair
