The calendar has flipped to 2022 and Elton Dharry yesterday provided names of his potential opponent for the tentative February 5 restart of boxing here.
Boxing starved fans will soon be satiated with a card comprising three title fights next month at the National Stadium and Dharry who will headline the event, stated that he will match gloves with either Keiver Fernandez (24-1-1) and Keyvin Lara (31-4-1).
The USA-based super flyweight was scheduled to be in the ring here on Boxing Day at the same venue, but the card was postponed due to the prevailing pandemic situation and international cricket being played later this month.
Hence the February 5 ring date. Though Dharry stated that the date for the card is still tentative since his team is still awaiting the guidelines from the COVID-19 Task Force, he was certain that he will either face Fernandez of Venezuela, or Lara of Nicaragua.
“They both accepted the fight, so it’s now about just picking the best opponent who will bring out the best in me.”
Dharry added “We have three title fights. I’m fighting for the WBC International Super flyweight title, Dexter (Marques) will be fighting for the WBC International flyweight title as well and Laured Stewart will be fighting for the national title.”
The 36-year-old orthodox fighter knows that Father Time is ticking on his career and plans to put on a show in front of the local boxing starved fans.
“I am in contact with match makers all around the world to get quality opponents who will come to Guyana and fight. My main aim is to win big fights and get another crack at the world title.”
Dharry who has been calling out world champions in his division, fought for the WBA Super flyweight title in 2019. However, he lost to Andrew Maloney in the latter’s hometown of Melbourne, Australia in a controversial ninth-round stoppage after the ring side doctor stopped the fight which Dharry said he was dominating due to an eye injury.
Dharry who improved his record to 24 (14KOs)-6-1 with a first round stoppage of in his last opponent in July, stated that his ultimate dream is to win a world title for Guyana.
