The Guyana Police Force (GPF) was crowned the inaugural champion of the Guyana National Women Football Association (GNWFA) Super-16 Festival, defeating GT Panthers by a 4-2 score-line on Sunday evening at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora.
GT Panthers took the initial lead in the contest, as Annalisa Vincent found the back of the net in the sixth minute. The aforesaid advantage proved to be short-lived as Dennecia Prince netted in the 15th minute to level proceedings.
Prince made her presence felt once more in the 19th minute to push the officers into the lead at 2-1. However, GT Panthers responded in equal measure in the form of Feona Benjamin in the 21st minute.
With the score remaining unchanged heading into the half-time interval, two unanswered conversions from Prince and Tiandi Smith secured the title in the second stanza. Prince sealed her hat-trick with a 47th minute effort before Tiandi Smith completed the result compliments of an 83rd minute strike.
With the win, GPF pocketed $500,000 and the championship trophy. The loser walked away with $300,000 and the runner-up accolade.
Meanwhile, Fruta Conquerors overcame the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) 3-2 in the third place playoff. Jalade Trim fashioned a second half double in the 63rd and 66th minute, while Sandra Johnson scored in the 18th minute. For the loser, Akeelah Vancooten netted in the 26th and 38th minute.
Fruta Conquerors pocketed $200,000 while GDF collected $100,000. On the individual side of the presentation, Vincent of GT Panthers was adjudged the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Highest Goal Scorer of the tournament.
Similarly, Trim of Fruta Conquerors walked away with the Best Midfielder accolade while McKale Prince of GPF copped the Best Forward award. Collette Hope of GPF received the Best Defender title while teammate Nicola Chester pocketed the Best Goalkeeper accolade. The Most Improved Player award went to Angel Denny of Fruta Conquerors.
