Almost 850 new COVID-19 cases were recorded yesterday with the Health Minister stating that younger persons are most affected.
This was disclosed during Dr Frank Anthony’s COVID-19 update where he informed that over the last 24 hours, 847 new cases were reported along with two deaths. This increase has taken the country’s total active cases up significantly with there now being 4,295 active cases.
A breakdown by region shows that the highest number of active cases are in Region Four with 2,789 cases followed by Region Six which has 438 active cases. Further, there are 351 cases in Region Three, 113 in Region Seven, 208 in Region Nine and 203 in Region Ten, with a smaller number of cases spread across the other regions.
As it relates to the active cases, Dr Anthony stated that there are about 80 persons in hospital with 52 of them currently at the Ocean View facility, 5 of which are in the intensive care unit.
When asked which age group has been the most affected of the new cases, the health minister stated that out of the 847 cases reported yesterday, 489 are persons between the ages of 25 and 39. If one were to extend the age range to 25 to 44, he added that it would then be 589 persons falling in that category.
“So I would say that the most active grouping where we’re seeing these cases is this younger grouping that is really mobile, moving around from place to place probably going to bars and things like that, they’re the ones who we are seeing that are getting infected,” he said.
