A Corporal attached to the Special Constabulary was crushed to death yesterday morning after she lost control of her bicycle and fell along the La Penitence Public Road, Georgetown.
The dead woman has been identified as Dawn Booker, 57, of Perseverance, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara (ECD). She sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The accident occurred around 8.15 am in the vicinity of La Penitence Market.
Director of the Guyana Police Force’s (GPF) Corporate Communications Unit, Mark Ramotar confirmed that the driver of motor lorry, GNN 5584 which was involved in the accident is currently in police custody assisting with the investigation.
According to the police, the accident was captured on video footage which showed that Booker was proceeding south on the eastern parapet of La Penitence Public Road, whilst a male pedal cyclist was proceeding in the opposite direction on the said eastern parapet.
As the two cyclists were passing each other, the police said Booker swerved west and lost control of her pedal cycle.
As a result, Booker fell onto roadway where she came into contact with the left rear wheel of the motor lorry which was proceeding south on the eastern side of the public road.
Booker was stationed at the Special Constabulary Headquarters. She was enlisted in the force on June 1, 1990 and was also a member of the Joint Services Mixed Voice Choir.
The force’s welfare officer, Jewel Sullivan and a team yesterday visited Booker’s relatives and offered condolences to her family.
A breathalyser test conducted on the driver, a 26 year-old Corentyne, Berbice resident found no trace of alcohol on his breath, the police said.
