The Bonasika family of eight who recently lost their home to fire will soon start to rebuild following a helping hand from the Ministry of Public Works and the Private Sector Commission.
Yesterday afternoon, Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar along with Chairman of the Private Sector Commission, Paul Cheong and Region Three Chairman Sheik Ayube visited the family of Joshua Gill. The family lost their home in a fire on December,30, 2021.
During the presentation ceremony, Indar told the family that President Irfaan Ali having learnt about the incident instructed him to visit and also to offer immediate interventions. He said he then reached out to the Private Sector Commission Chair who immediately raised over $5 million. The money will be given to three families who recently suffered tragedies.
Gill’s family will receive $1m in cash and $1.2m in materials.
One million will be given to the family whose house collapsed killing Seematie Chandra and her daughter Tosha Sookdeo. Another $1m will be given to a Tuschen family who also lost their home to fire.
The donation of building materials to Gill was done by the Ministry of Housing and Water. Cement was among the building materials.
During the handing over ceremony at Bonasika, Lower Essequibo River, Cheong said that the private sector was eager to help the families. He said that Guyanese have a habit of giving back and having learnt of the incidents the private sector immediately came on board.
Region Three Chairman Sheik Ayube said that the Regional Administration was on the ground since the tragic incidents in Bonasika. He said that after the fire and the house mishap he visited the area and an assessment was made. He also said that clothing and household items were also donated to the families. Ayube said that the Regional Administration will continue to work along with the families in improving the livelihoods of those who have suffered.
