West Indies under-19 lost their second International Cricket Council’s Under-19 World Cup warm up match yesterday after going down to South Africa Under-19s by three wickets at the National Stadium, Providence.
South Africa U19s won the toss and inserted the hosts who were rolled over for 189 in 43.2 overs. South Africa U19s then coasted to 191 for seven in 35.3 overs.
West Indies U19s lost opener Jordan Johnson in the first over and slipped to 53 for four by the end of the 12th over.
Matthew Nandu, who stroked a half century in the first warm-up game against India, was trapped leg before wicket to Michael Copeland for 19 to add to West Indies’ troubles.
Skipper Ackeem Auguste, however, had different plans and worked his way to 52 from 47 balls, laced with six fours and two sixes.
Auguste added 63 runs for the seventh wicket with Carlon Bowen-Tuckett who played the supporting role with 45 runs from 85 balls. His innings included five boundaries but ended via hit wicket.
Extras accounted for the next best tally with 20.
For South Africa, Matthew Boast ended with three wickets for nine runs.
Copeland and Aphiwe Mnyanda picked up two wickets each while Asakhe Tsaka, Liam Alder and Andile Simelane bagged one wicket each.
In the chase, South Africa U19s captain, George Van Heerden, piloted the chase with an unbeaten 61. His 59-ball innings was highlighted by six fours and two sixes.
Van Heerden came to the crease after Ethan-John Cunningham (36) and Gerhardus Maree (0) were dismissed off of successive deliveries from Anderson Mahase (2-31) but added 68 for the fourth wicket with Dewald Brevis who made a 70-ball 50, decorated with four fours and two sixes before falling to Onaje Amory (1-37).
McKenny Clarke kept West Indies U19s in the hunt with 3-34 but 19 extras and a fighting 13 from Andile Simelane saw South Africa U19s over the line.
West Indies will play their first official match tomorrow at the National Stadium against Australia.
