The Region Two administration in collaboration with the Anna Regina Town Council (ARTC) and the Essequibo Chamber of Commerce and Industry yesterday started a clean-up operation within the township.
The exercise was spearheaded by Region Two Chairperson Vilma De Silva, the Prime Minister’s representative, Arnold Adams, Town Councillors and Community Enhancement workers.
Similar clean-up exercises are planned for Charity on Thursday and at Suddie on Friday.
According to De Silva, many persons were dumping their garbage along the road leading to the Mainstay resort. As a result, she said a hut will be put up with an officer to keep watch. She said anyone found littering will be prosecuted.
De Silva also noted that a clean-up exercise was held in November, 2021, with a mini-excavator clearing several trenches along the Essequibo Coast. She said that minibus and hire car drivers are also encouraged to place bags in their vehicles so that passengers can dispose of their garbage.
“I am happy with the support. However, we need residents to get their bins and to dispose of their garbage safely. We can make Essequibo clean. We need everyone’s support,” she said.
Deputy Mayor Lorna Fiedktou said that the Anna Regina Town Council will continue to monitor the situation and anyone found illegally dumping the garbage will be taken to court. She added that the ARTC will be looking out for litterbugs.
The clean-up initiative is expected to be maintained by the respective Neighbourhood Democratic Councils in the region.
