Dear Editor,
Why does the Ministry of Education continue to ignore Saraswati Vidya Niketan (SVN) in the heart of Region Three? Is it because it is just a private school? Or a Hindu school? The entire country saw that, on two occasions last year, while their names were announced among the country top performers, SVN students were actually absent from the event while students from the hinterlands and Region Two, who also did well, were in the room at the NCERD building.
Now comes the government’s announcement that it is “bringing” CAPE to Region Three, as a huge billboard at the western end of the Demerara Harbour Bridge indicates. Surely, the Ministry of Education must be aware of the fact that CAPE is already in the region, and that SVN has been preparing students for this level of the CXC examination for more than ten years running, and has been doing so with outstanding success.
Somehow, it seems that the Ministry of Education cannot yet come to terms with the existence of SVN and its consistently stellar achievement. The Department of Education does not need to be reminded that this private school, as other private schools, both primary and secondary, in Guyana, have been making a major contribution to the development of education. Are not the students of SVN, the nation’s children also?
Sincerely,
Richie Pooran
