An Albouystown man yesterday told a city magistrate that he was drunk when he walked into an apartment and stole laptops and other items.
Christopher Gonsalves, 30, of Independence Bou-levard, Albouystown, was brought before Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts. He confessed that on January 21, at Camp Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown, he broke into the apartment, and stole a haversack, two laptops, a Nigerian passport, personal documents, a cellphone, a bag, a charger, several flashdrives and other personal items, amounting to $389,500, in value.
The Police Prosecutor told the court that the virtual complainants secured the apartment with the necessary devices and went to sleep at about 00:30 hrs. At around 03:30 hrs, the male occupant was awakened by his girlfriend, who told him that someone was in the apartment. The pair then made checks and observed that the articles mentioned in the charge were missing. The police were informed and an investigation was launched.
During the investigation, the police were informed that Gonsalves had committed the crime and he was later arrested.
The man after hearing the prosecutor’s facts, said that he was under the influence and he didn’t know that he took the people’s belongings. He said that he entered the apartment through the door, which he claimed was open. How-ever, the virtual complainant, who was present at court, said that it was not possible that the door was open because he locked the door himself.
The magistrate placed Gonsalves on remand as she awaits a probation report before his sentencing, which will take place on February 28.
Gonsalves was previously charged with attempting to bribe a police officer to get out of a narcotics trafficking charge.
