TWest Indies secured an eight-wicket win over Zimbabwe in the 11th place play off of the ICC Under-19 World Cup in Trinidad yesterday compliments of centuries from Teddy Bishop and Kevin Wickham.
Winning the toss and opting to bat, Zimbabwe posted 256 for four from their allotted 50 overs while West Indies reached 262 for two with four balls to spare.
In the chase, West Indies captain, Matthew Nandu, was trapped leg before wicket to Brian Bennett in the second over for one, but that did not stop the hosts from acing the chase.
Bishop was unbothered at the crease, carving 11 fours and a six during his unbeaten 112 which came from 121 balls. The opener added 194 for the second wicket with Wickham who followed up on his scores of 56, 61 not out and 22 since coming in as a COVID-19 replacement with 104. Wickham’s 116-ball innings featured 17 boundaries before he was dismissed by Matthew Schonken.
Bishop was then joined by Rivaldo Clarke who made 28 not out from 52, hitting one four and one six in the process. The pair shared an unbroken third-wicket stand of 67 while Zimbabwe gifted 17 extras.
Eariler, Johaan Layne (2-44) and Giovonte Depeiza (1-42) were the only bowlers to put their names in the wickets’ column for the West Indies.
David Bennett piloted his side’s innings with 77 not out coming from 105 balls, featuring three sixes and seven fours. He added 102 runs for the fourth-wicket with Brian Bennett who made 62 from 84 balls, laced with eight boundaries.
David Bennett then shared an unfinished 74-run partnership with Connor Mitchell. Mitchell made a brisk 26-ball 42 not out, highlighted by two sixes and four fours.
While West Indies also gave away 22 extras, Steven Saul made 34 from 50 balls. Saul had added 55 for the third wicket with Brian Bennett before he was run out by Bishop.
