The Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) is expected to resume cricket action this weekend with the staging of a T10 tournament.
This is according to Chairman of the Competitions Committee, Shaun Massiah, in an interview with this publication yesterday.
According to Massiah, since the pandemic first touched local shores back in 2020, cricket has hardly been played in the capital city but he is hopeful that this tournament could bring back players to the fore.
“We, the GCA are looking to resume cricket this weekend, February 5-6, but we are looking to resume with a T10 knockout competition with all the affiliated clubs,” said Massiah.
“The idea is for us coming out of the pandemic to see if the clubs can stand up to fielding two teams and for players to make their way back to the clubs so it can eventually field two teams,” he added.
Massiah said that he expects about 30 teams to take part in the competition. If this is so, the Competitions Chairman reckoned it could be completed over the same weekend with at least three matches per venue and teams playing twice in the same day.
This will be finalized today when the draw is held at the Muslim Youth Organisation ground but Massiah opined that he is wary that some teams may find it hard given that players must be vaccinated or submit a negative PCR test prior to playing as per the COVID-19 guidelines.
“Even though it is a knockout competition and teams will be looking to win it is more trying to get the players back so we could get back to our regular divisions,” he said while continuing, “it is an open competition for our first and second division teams, we are looking to encourage the first division clubs to enter both their first division and second division teams and then we are looking to the normal second-division teams that don’t have first-division status along with the associate teams as well.”
Among the teams expected to be participate are Georgetown Cricket Club, Everest Cricket Club, Demerara Cricket Club, University of Guyana, Police Sports Club, Transport Sports Club, Guyana Defense Force and others.
