Workers and machinery attached to the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) have been dispatched to the Andrews, Better Success area in Region Two to remedy the broken Andrews sluice door.
The sluice door broke at approximately 5:00 pm yesterday inundating over 25 families in the community.
Region Two Regional Vice Chairman Humace Oodit reported that they are currently laying stop logs to stem the flow of water. He added that rice lands in the area have not been affected.
Oodit disclosed that the NDIA will be making a steel door for the Andrew’s sluice.
Residents in the area related that water started to gush into their yards from the Atlantic Ocean and many of their kitchen gardens were quickly under water.
One of the affected residents, Nikita Persaud, related, “We try moving things but the way it keep flowing my fowl pen is filled with water.”
Residents are worried that the water will enter their rice fields.
The Regional Administration is monitoring the situation.
