Kavin Singh, the prisoner who escaped from the Lusignan Prison on Thursday morning, was recaptured in the Good Hope, East Coast Demerara (ECD) cane fields yesterday afternoon.
In a statement issued yesterday, Director of Prisons (ag) Nicklon Elliot confirmed that a Joint Services team recaptured Singh around 15.50 hrs.
Singh is expected to face a charge of escaping from lawful custody in the new week.
Singh, 18, who was remanded to the prison on December 6, 2021 on charges of possession of ammunition and firearm and armed robbery.
The police had said that Singh was among seven inmates who were “uplifted” by a prison officer to attend court at Lusignan Prison.
The inmates were left in custody of Prison Officer Rawlewayne Payne.
Enquiries later revealed that around 09:45 hrs on Thursday, Singh, who was foot-cuffed, requested to use the washroom situated to the north western side of the court compound. “Permission was granted and Singh left and went to use the washroom,” the release said.
Prison Officer Payne then left and went to the court office, leaving Singh in the washroom and upon his return he discovered Singh missing. An alarm was then raised.
It is suspected that Singh escaped by scaling the eastern fence of the court compound. “Checks were made in the court compound and it was observed that the eastern fence of the court compound (chain link fence) was detached from the post,” the police had said.
