Extradition proceedings have been initiated against two men, who are wanted in the United States of America for sexual assault charges.
Kareem Abdool Hack and Julian Yhip were on Friday both brought before Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts. The two men, who were recently arrested at Canje, Berbice and a location at Georgetown, are facing extradition in order to stand trial in the United States.
The matter has been adjourned until February 8.
According to both men, they were aware of the charges. Hack has been staying in Guyana for 15 years and owns a tint shop. Yhip, who has also taken up residency in Guyana, works as a chef at the RS53 Resto Bar and Lounge. He told the court that he was previously charged in the United States but the matter did not go to trial.
Yhip said he would not contest the charge but asked for bail because he has a new born child and wanted to spend his remaining days in Guyana with her. However, prosecutors Teshana Lake and Diana Kaulesar-O’Brien from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, objected to bail. The men were denied bail and the proceedings were adjourned until February 8.
