Three unvaccinated men are latest COVID-19 fatalities

The Ministry of Health (MoH) on Friday confirmed the deaths of three more persons who tested positive for COVID-19, taking the total number of deaths recorded from the pandemic in Guyana to 1,179.

The deceased were all men, ages 61, 71 and 82, all of whom were unvaccinated against the virus. They died between February 3 and February 4.

Minister of Health Dr Frank Anthony on Thurs-day stated that as the country emerges from the suspected Omicron wave, a decrease in infections will be evident. However, during his daily COVID-19 update Anthony lamented that many of the persons being admitted to hospital remained those who were either unvaccinated or were only partially vaccinated. “…Because of that they would not get the kind of protection that they need if they are going to fight off COVID-19, so this is a good time to remind people of the rationale and the reasons why they should get vaccinated,” he said.

Meanwhile, the MoH’s updated COVID-19 dashboard showed that 432 new cases were confirmed from 2,448 more tests that were done. The total number of infections recorded up to Friday was 61,108.

The dashboard also showed 5,689 active cases in the country, 14 of which were in the country’s COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit.
