Ovid Williams, a miner who police say fatally chopped another man to death last Sunday, has been charged with the crime and remanded to prison.
Williams, 33, of Moruca Village, in Region One, appeared before Magistrate Crystal Lambert at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
He was not required to plead to the capital charge that on January 30, at Balamani Backdam, Cuyuni River, he murdered Brian Melville, 42, a miner of Lot 105 Second St Craig Village, East Bank Demerara. He was remanded until February 28.
According to the police, Melville was allegedly murdered at 18:00 hrs at Balamani Backdam, Cuyuni River on January 30. The police said that witness reports claim that Melville finished working for the day and was standing at the entrance of his camp when the accused ran up to him and dealt him three chops — to his neck, shoulder and hand — before escaping into the bushes. The wounded man then fell to the ground and became motionless. He was later pronounced dead.
Williams was arrested along the Puruni Trail the following day with the suspected murder weapon in his possession.
