The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) has refuted the claims of Corentyne fire victim Kulcharran Prashad that their tenders arrived without water when it responded to the fire that destroyed his home last Thursday.
Prashad, 63, of Section ‘C’, Lot 56 Number 79 Village, Corentyne, had lambasted the response by the GFS on Thursday, saying it had failed him. He claimed the fire service arrived without water and then took some time to source water from the Corentyne River.
However, the GFS, in a statement to the press yesterday, explained that one jet working from Water Tender 87’s tank supply and two jets working from an open water source using light pump 109 were used to extinguish the fire.
The GFS also said the cause of the fire was a slack connection of overhead wires that resulted in arcing and sparking, which ignited window curtains and the flames spread to the entire building.
