Despite intermittent showers, Ronaldo Alimohamed and the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) left-arm spinners left Police Sports club in an uncomfortable position of 90 for seven after day one of the Georgetown Cricket Association/GISE/ Star Party Rental/ Trophy Stall two-day, first-division semi-final.
Hosts, GCC won the toss and inserted Police but rain ensured that no play was possible in the first two sessions however, with one interruption, 24 overs was possible.
A watchful start by national players, Kevon Boodie and Kemol Savory frustrated GCC at the start especially after two catches went down early on. But Alimohamed (3-23) provided the breakthrough as Savory trickled a faint edge to Martin Pestano-Belle who did well diving to his left to take a low catch and send the left-hander back for eight.
Alex Algoo failed to trouble the score with Alimohamed trapping him leg before wicket while Boodie was caught by Krsna Singh off of Alimohamed for 18 from 36 balls.
Pernell London was patient, soaking up 40 balls for his 20 but was undone by left-arm spinner, Stephon Wilson, Mavendra Dindyal pulling off a brilliant running back catch at gully. Wilson also removed Andrew Lyght jr., for two to end the day with 2-28.
In came Quentin Sampson to provide a bit of powerhitting for the lawmen as he struck Wilson for three sixes and one four during a 23-run over. The right-handed batsman from Essequibo raced to 28 from just a dozen deliveries but lost Mark Gonsalves and Jason Heyliger to GCC skipper, Devon Lord (2-6).
Over at Everest Cricket Club, the hosts were expected to be locked in battle with Demerara Cricket Club but rain forced the entire first day to be washed out.
The match resumes today at 09.30 hours.
