Davanand Narine who stabbed and killed his wife back in 2019 and attempted to commit suicide after, is now awaiting sentence after pleading guilty when his matter was called yesterday morning at the High Court at Suddie.
“Is my wife…I love she…me is the cause,” Narine said of the demise of the mother of three, when Justice Jo-Ann Barlow enquired whether he knew what he was pleading to; and whether anyone was forcing him to plead.
He then said that he was not being forced and was pleading of his own free will.
Narine had originally been indicted for the murder of Farida Khayum. He, however, denied the capital offence but admitted guilt on the lesser charge of manslaughter.
The now 53-year-old former chainsaw operator accepted that he unlawfully killed the woman on May 16th, 2019 at their Lot 9, Anna Regina, Essequibo, home.
Justice Barlow has deferred sentencing to March 8th to facilitate the presentation of a probation report on Narine.
Narine was represented by defence attorney Latchmi Dindayal.
The State is being represented by Prosecutor Tiffini Lyken.
The prosecution’s facts had been that on the day in question, Narine and his wife were at home in their kitchen when an argument erupted.
Police had said in a statement that investigations revealed that Khayum was preparing to go to a nearby function, when the argument started.
It was during this time police said, that the man armed himself with a knife and stabbed Khayum about her body. The woman was subsequently rushed to the Suddie hospital where she later died.
Following the stabbing, Narine was himself warded at the same hospital under police guard after lawmen said he had ingested an herbicide.
Khayum, 39, a domestic worker, had been stabbed several times about her body, including to her neck.
Stabroek News had been told that the couple had had constant arguments.
