The Ministry of Health on Friday reported five more COVID-19 deaths, including four octogenarians, as well as 48 new infections and Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony urged Guyanese to be careful while participating in upcoming Mashramani celebrations.
In a statement, the ministry said the latest fatalities bring the total number of COVID-19 deaths recorded in Guyana to 1,208.
The deceased, who succumbed between Tuesday and Friday, were identified as an 87-year-old woman from Region Six; a 72-year-old woman from Region Three; and an 81-year-old woman, an 82-year-old woman and an 87-year-old man, all from Region Four. Three of them were unvaccinated while the vaccination status of the others was listed as “unknown.”
Meanwhile, the updated COVID-19 dashboard released by the ministry showed new cases coming from Region One, where 8 new cases were recorded; Region Two, where 3 new cases were recorded; Region Three, where 7 new cases were recorded; Region Four, where 3 cases were recorded; Region Five, where 6 cases were recorded; Region Six, where 7 cases were recorded; Region Seven, where 3 new cases were recorded; Region Nine, where 5 new cases were recorded; and Region Ten, where 6 new cases were recorded.
In addition, there were 11 persons in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) as well as 77 persons in institutional isolation.
Anthony, in his COVID-19 update on Friday, urged Guyanese to be careful while participating in the upcoming Mashramani activities and reminded them that certain measures are still in place. “While we have lifted the curfew, all the other measures are still in place and I do hope that any person who is promoting activities or involved in these types of entertainment arrangements, that they would first seek guidance from the [COVID-19] Task Force before proceeding to organise any such gathering. COVID is not over,” Anthony said.
