An attendant of a mechanic’s shop was yesterday released on $90,000 bail after he denied stealing a customer’s iPhone from his car.
Joel Cato, 23, was hauled before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts where he was charged with stealing the smartphone.
He denied that on December 12, 2021, at Agricola Public Road, he stole an iPhone valued $320,000, which was the property of Richard Kansinally.
At about 20:45 hrs, Kansinally parked his car at the mechanic’s shop and went into the shop along with his two passengers. According to the police, Kansinally said that the attendant, who was Cato, behaved in a strange manner when they entered the shop. It was also reported that another car was parked in close proximity to Kansinally’s car.
It is alleged that that Cato went into the man’s car and picked up the iPhone before he went into the car that was parked beside Kansinally’s car and drove off.
Kansinally then returned to the car and observed that his phone was missing. He then made a report to the police and Cato was arrested on Monday. He was shown video footage which was obtained during the investigations by police. The police said that Cato also gave an oral confession.
However, after his guilty plea Cato was released on $90,000 bail with the condition that he reports to the Ruimveldt Police Station every Monday at 09”00 hrs. He was told to return to the court on April 1.
