The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) overcame a one set deficit to prevail 3-1 over Young Achievers when the Demerara Volleyball Association (DVA) Senior League continued on Friday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Homestretch Avenue.
Falling behind following a 23-25 score at the end of the first half, the army unit quickly turned the tide, as they stormed to three unanswered sets to clinch the result.
The second set started the blitz, following a 7-7 score, as GDF raced to a 10-7 lead to create separation owing to a 3-0 blitz. The officers advantage then grew to 15-10.
A 4-1 exchange further solidified GDF’s dominance at 19-11, before a 6-3 scoring run sealed the set and equalized the match at 1-1.
Young Achievers responded with a 9-4 run to take the early lead in third set. However, GDF reduced the deficit at 11-10 following a 6-1 exchange.
GDF then took the lead at 13-10, only for Young Achievers with six unanswered points to retake the pole position at 16-13. A 4-0 reply pushed the army unit back in front at 17-16, before a 8-4 run sealed the set and gave the army outfit a 2-1 lead.
The fourth stanza mirrored the third, as Young Achievers raced to a 5-3 advantage, which was eventually maintained at 11-9 and 14-11 respectively.
However, once again GDF battled back compliments of a 5-2 charge to level proceedings at 16-16.
A 20-19 lead was then acquired as GDF secured four points while restricting their foe to three points. The come from behind win was then sealed as GDF outscored Young Achievers 5-2.
The event continues at the same venue on Tuesday. GDF will lock horns with Eagles from 7:15hrs.
