A new champion was crowned in the second Rawle Toney 3×3 Basketball Classic after Linden defeated Royals in a Mining Town derby Sunday at the Burnham Court on Middle and Carmichael Streets.
Linden replaced previous holders Pit-bulls at the helm of the emerging format, prevailing in a tense 10-minute affair 8-7 in front of a sizable crowd at the recently refurbished venue.
With the win, Linden walked away with $500,000 and the championship trophy. They also walked away with four championship rings. Shelroy Thomas was adjudged the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament.
In the semi-finals, Linden secured their place in the championship match after defeating East Coast Demerara powerhouse Guardians 15-13 while Royals eliminated defending champion Pit-bulls 7-5.
In the third-place playoff, Guardians gained a walkover from defending champion Pit-bulls, who opted against competing.
