Food for the Poor (FFTP) Guyana Inc recently constructed 22 homes in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) and Region Five (West Coast Berbice) in observance of Guyana’s 52nd Republic Anniversary.
According to FFTP Public Relations Officer, Jonelle DeViera, the houses will provide improved living conditions for 110 residents in Region Two and Five. She added the houses were built to recognise Guyana’s achievement of its status as a republic.
All the houses were constructed with a rain harvesting component which will enable families to store water safely for consumption and domestic purposes. Each house was also partially furnished with beds, a table and chairs along with a 2-burner gas stove.
DeViera also informed that under its General Housing Programme, FFTP has constructed 120 homes in regions Two, Four, Five, and Six.
The communities which benefitted included Region Two (Onderneeming, Huis t’ Dieren, Queenstown, Capoey, Jibb and Perservance). In Region Four, Waiakabra; West Coast Berbice in Region Five, and Corentyne in Region Six.
One of the recent donees from Essequibo, Shervin Amsterdam, said that he is living with his wife and four children and could not afford to provide a house for his family, since he would usually get only seasonal employment. He expressed gratitude to FFTP Guyana Inc for constructing a house for him and his family.
Camilla Fordyce of West Coast Berbice was also overjoyed at having received a house. She is a single parent of three and is a midwife attached to the Fort Wellington Hospital. She disclosed that she was in an abusive relationship and was forced to move back to her parents’ residence in Berbice. When she returned she was forced to sleep on the verandah with her children since there were no available rooms. Her parents’ home already had 11 persons living there. She said she then reached out for the help and is so happy that help came.
