‘Brave’ charged with murder of daughter’s boyfriend

A construction worker who was preparing to leave the country after allegedly fatally shooting his daughter’s boyfriend, was yesterday charged with  the man’s murder.

Sherwayne Brandt, called ‘Brave’, 44, of Norton Street, Wortmanville, Georgetown, appear-ed at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court where Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan remanded him until March 22.

He was not required to plead to the charge which states that between February 18 and 19, at Freeman Street, East La Penitence, Georgetown, he murdered Leon Gittens, 25, of Lot 118 Cowan Street, Kingston, George-town.

According to the police, Brandt threatened Gittens last month. It was reported that Brandt went to the address mentioned in the charge, where Gittens was supposed to be picking up his girlfriend, Brandt’s daughter.

The woman told the police that when her father arrived, she noticed that he was dressed in a blue dress and wearing a wig. He was also brandishing a black handgun when he entered the yard. She said that she ran for cover after seeing the weapon. Subsequently, she heard three loud explosions, which sounded like gunshots, before the man fled.

After the suspect escaped, the woman made checks and saw Gittens lying motionless in front of a bedroom. She raised an alarm and the man was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Brandt was arrested on Saturday on arrival at the Eugene F Correia Inter-national Airport, Ogle, at around 3pm. It is believed that the man was on his way to the USA via Trinidad.
