After being floored by the COVID-19 pandemic, amateur boxing is back on its feet and will make a fighting return tomorrow in the form of the Pepsi Mike Parris National U-16 Boxing tournament.
These and other details were disclosed yesterday during a press briefing by the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA).
The event which will see in excess of 40 pugilists battling for trophies and medals, returns to its roots after a two-year hiatus. According to president of the association, Steve Ninvalle, the 11th edition of fixture will box off from noon at the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Gym.
Ninvalle further stated that the competition will usher in a welcome return of the fistic sport in the 592, “since no local competitions were held since February 15, 2020.”
The association, he added, will be “placing much of our emphasis this year and going forward” on the nursery of the discipline.
“The nursery programme is the foundation for us and that is where we will be placing much of our emphasis this year and going forward. We think it is better if we have plans that can take us not just for tomorrow or the next week but plans that will take us into the next five years and beyond.”
Ninvalle concluded by thanking DDL and Pepsi “for sticking with us through the good times and the bad.”
GBA’s First Vice President, Dr Marissa Parris reiterated Ninvalle’s stance, echoing that she was thankful for the support of DDL and looks forward to the company remaining a cornerman for years to come.
DDL’s Brand Manager, Larry Wills, reassured Ninvalle and the association of its continued support for the sport and its boxers.
Meanwhile, Assistant Secretary Treasurer of the association, Seon Bristol, remarked that the body welcomes the return of competition for its pugilists who will safely adhere to all COVID-19 measures. He also encouraged other corporate entities to follow in the footsteps of DDL and support the fistic sport.
