Corentyne housewives charged over chopping

Two Corentyne women were on Thursday placed on $25,000 bail each after they were charged with the unlawful wounding of a Port Mourant, Corentyne woman, who sustained a chop injury.

Vashanie Cyrel, also known as ‘Dede,’ 20, a housewife, and Malisa Edwin, also known as ‘Mello’, 26, also a housewife, both of Lot 119 Freeyard, Port Mourant, appeared before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh at the Whim Magistrate’s Court.

They were jointly charged with unlawful wounding committed on Amrita Singh. The wounding occurred on February 20, at Freeyard, Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice.

They were not required to enter a plea to the charge and were placed on $25,000 bail each. They will return to court on April 4 for report.

Stabroek News previously reported that the two women had allegedly attacked Singh, who was pushing a bicycle through a cross street at the location. The entire incident was video-recorded and posted on several social media platforms on Sunday evening.

The video shows Singh pushing a bicycle when suddenly one accused appears and strikes her to her head. Seconds later, the second accused, armed with a cutlass, approaches and chops Singh to the head, causing her to fall to the parapet and to scream for help.

An elderly female could be seen pushing away the two suspects, while several other persons were observed armed with pieces of wood and cutlasses on the road at that time.

Singh was rushed to the Port Mourant Hospital, where she received several stitches for the chop injury on her head.
