A Corentyne man was on Friday remanded to prison on a charge of attempted murder following an attack on a Port Mourant labourer who was chopped multiple times.
Vollins Smartt, 37, was also charged with assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest.
Smartt appeared before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh at the Whim Magistrate’s Court, where he was charged with the attempted murder of Suresh Sookra, 40, of Miss Phoebe, Port Mourant, Corentyne.
He was not required to plead to the charge and bail was subsequently denied, resulting in Smartt being remanded to prison.
According to information gathered, Sookra, of Lot 168 Miss Phoebe, Port Mourant Corentyne, was at Shava’s Poultry Farm, located at Portuguese Quarters, Port Mourant, where he works as a labourer, lying on a table when he was allegedly attacked by Smartt, who was armed with a 22-inch cutlass.
Sookra, who sustained several chop injuries about his body, ran about 150 feet away from the farm in an effort to escape Smartt. However, he then collapsed and was eventually picked up by police and rushed to the Port Mourant Public Hospital.
He has since been transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he remains hospitalised in a serious but stable condition.
Meanwhile, Smartt was also charged with resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer. Stabroek News was told that police made efforts to arrest Smart on Monday last and it was then that he allegedly resisted being arrested and assaulted a police officer in the process.
He pleaded not guilty to the resisting arrest and assault charges. He will return to court on April, 4, for report on all three matters.
