Junior Public Works Minister Deodat Indar has assured vendors that the government will be addressing the state of the road at the Leonora Market, West Coast Demerara.
Indar visited the market yesterday in response to vendors’ complaints that the state of the road obstructs persons from shopping at the market. The minister was accompanied by Regional Chairman Ayube Inshaan and government parliamentarians Dr Tandika Smith and Vickash Ramkissoon.
During a telephone interview with this newspaper, Indar said that his visit was an attempt to have persons air their concerns. He related that vendors at the market told him that the road’s condition is costing them sales and as a result he pledged that the government will be addressing this issue soon. “I went to the populated areas to see how business is doing, how vending is doing, to meet people, talk to them. We picked up whatever issues they have. Persons told us and we will be addressing them,” he said.
Indar disclosed that he had traversed the road and it was muddy and slushy due to the rain. He said that the vendors explained that the road has been in that state for several years. “Everyone that we met said that they wanted the road fixed. The road is muddy and slushy. It was dirty to walk on… they are saying that once the rain falls, nobody comes in and they suffer. And they said it’s been that way for years so they want it fixed. Everyone we spoke to, even the people in the market, are saying nobody is coming in there when it’s raining.”
The minister assured that the state of the road at the Leonora market is among the matters which the government will be focused on and addressing soon. He also visited the Parika Stelling.
