JuLo’s Enterprises, a stationery and ice cream shop in Grove, East Bank Demerara, last weekend donated two FIDE- approved tournament-sized chess sets and one FIDE-approved DGT chess clock to the St Ignatius Secondary School in Lethem, Region Nine.
Director of the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) Loris Nathoo handed over the items to three teachers, Alessandra Ng-a-Fook, Shinay Stephens and Nanresh Persaud, at the St Ignatius school on behalf of JuLo’s.
Nathoo, whose portfolio encompasses fund-raising for the GCF, explained to the students and teachers of St Ignatius that the GCF intends to:
1. Expand the chess-in-Schools programme to Region Nine by providing immediate online chess training to its students and teachers.
2. Provide additional chess equipment and other training material.
3. To assist the region in establishing an association and formalizing the management and development structure when it takes form.
Nathoo said he was heartened and pleasantly surprised at the number of children and teachers who already knew the game, and it was the GCF’s intention to increase those numbers methodically.
