West Indies women’s team bowling coach, Corey Colleymore, wants to see improvement in several facets of the game as his side draws closer to their 50-over World Cup opening match against hosts, New Zealand.
West Indies women suffered a 90-run defeat against Australia in their first warm up match and will play their second warm up today against India before their opening match on Thursday.
Speaking yesterday, the former West Indies pacer described the fielding as “ordinary” while crediting the bowling performance.
“I also say to the team, bowling plans don’t work without fielding and I think we were ordinary in the field and that is something we need to improve on,” he said.
The 44-year-old reasoned that the side did well to keep Australia to 259 and now has a chance to improve on this aspect.
“I think it was a good performance by the bowlers, keeping a team like Australia who are probably ranked number one in the world to 250-odd, I think we are smart enough and we also just discussed that…I think Australia were a bit cautious upfront, we know they are a dangerous side but we didn’t want to take things for granted but I thought it was a good run up by the bowlers,” he noted.
He added, “It’s always good to get 50 overs in, the captain coming back to bowling, bowling 10 overs and the vice-captain [Anisa Mohammed] as well was good to see.”
Looking ahead, Colleymore said the side must improve on their performance.
“I think it would be a similar approach, looking to improve what we have done. I think we also realized it is a small ground and the game against Australia was a good way to see where we are at.”
