The Lady Jaguars suffered their first loss in the 2022 Concacaf women’s U20 Championship, suffering a 0-5 thrashing at the hands of heavyweight Mexico yesterday at the Estadio Olimpico Felix Sanchez, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
It was a humbling defeat for the Guyanese in what was the second meeting of the teams in the tournament history, as the contest was effectively over at the end of the first half following a 3-0 advantage. Mexico defeated Guyana 3-0 in the 2020 edition at the same stage of the tournament.
Paola Chavero commenced the rout with a 10th-minute penalty conversion before Maritza Maldonado tallied the first of two eventual conversions in the 28th minute.
Completing the first half blitz was Tatiana Flores in the 37th minute. Maldonado completed her double in the 56th minute to make it 4-0 before Aylin Pena completed the result in the 78th minute.
Guyana’s starting XI comprised Aneesa O’Brien, Jessica Myers, Hasha Holder, Savannah Mordesir-Singh, Rory Scott, Samantha Banfield, Kiana Khedoo, Jenea Knight, Jessica Jagdeo, Shamya Daniels, and Audrey Narine.
The resulting statistics further highlighted the disparity in quality between the teams. Guyana failed to register a solitary shot in the entirety of the contest while the Mexicans fashioned a mammoth 31 shots, with 12 on target. Nine corners also resulted from Mexico’s constant wave of attacks while the Guyanese also drew blank in this category.
The possession stat was also heavily skewed in favour of Mexico, who accumulated 70% compliments of 567 passes recorded at a conversion of 84%, more than doubling Guyana’s output of 243 passes at a rate of 61%.
The Guyanese in their opening encounter, upset Honduras 2-0 on Saturday at the same venue. They will now end their group campaign against Panama tomorrow. In the earlier match of the group, Panama and Honduras battled to a 1-1 stalemate.
