(Trinidad Guardian) The ANSA McAL Foundation has announced five awardees for the 2022 Anthony N Sabga Awards for Caribbean Excellence—including T&T’s own, Professor Christine Carrington.
At a ceremony yesterday, the foundation announced the 2022 Laureates who will each receive the Anthony N Sabga Caribbean Awards for Excellence Gold Medal and Citation, TT$500,000 and an opportunity for visibility and support across the Caribbean region.
This year’s awardees are: Jamaican author Marlon James in the Arts and Letters category, Guyanese businessman Shyam Nokta in the Entrepreneurship category, Barbadian ophthalmologist and oculoplastic surgeon Dr Kim Jebodhsingh and Surinamese entrepreneur Anuskha Varsha Sonai, who were jointly awarded in the Public & Civic Contributions category and Trinidadian Professor Christine Carrington in the Science and Technology category.
Jebodhsingh and Sonai will split the $500,000 award in their category.
In presenting remarks after the laureates were announced, programme director of the awards, Maria Superville-Neilson, said the awards are now in their 17th year.
“Dr Sabga, after whom they were named, had a vision and a belief that we in the Caribbean can grow our own talent, for our own sustainability and therefore we should recognise those among us for exceptional ability,” Superville-Neilson said.
According to its website, the goal of the awards programme is to recognise, encourage and support the pursuit of excellence by Caribbean people for the benefit of the region. The awards are privately funded, free from political and other influences. Superville-Neilson said in the past 17 years, the awards have seen the disbursement of almost TT$25 million in awards.
“We now have 54 laureates and with the additional five laureates that we just announced, we have given out a total monetary award of $23.5 million Trinidad and Tobago dollars,” she said.
The foundation’s nominations for its 2023 awards will remain open until March 20, 2022, Superville-Neilson said. The awards are open to those between the ages of 35 to 55 years old.
