The Ministry of Health on Saturday confirmed 16 new COVID-19 infections.
According to the ministry’s updated COVID-19 dashboard, the new infections were confirmed from 1, 130 tests that were done.
The dashboard also showed that there were 290 persons in home isolation, 15 persons in institutional isolation and 4 persons in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit.
No new death was reported as the country’s death toll from the virus remained at 1,223.
Guyana has recently recorded a sharp decline in COVID infections and deaths.
Last Wednesday, Minister of Health Dr Frank Anthony confirmed the presence of the Omicron variant here based on the results of the genetic sequencing of the samples that were sent to the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) in Trinidad and Tobago.
“So of the 20 samples that we have sent, 19 came back positive for Omicron. One was indeterminate because in the samples itself, apparently they did not have enough genetic material in the sample to be able to sequence it,” Anthony said.
The minister continued to urge persons to be cautious and to protect themselves against the virus and the variant.
