The Lady Jaguars were dumped from the 2022 Concacaf Women’s Championship, losing to Haiti 1-2 in the round of 16 last evening at the Estadio Panamericano in San Cristobal, Dominican Republic.
Guyana’s starting XI comprised, Anessa O’Brien, Valentina Khan, Shamya Daniels, Jenea Knight, Jessica Myers, Savannah Mordesir-Singh, Audrey Narine, Kiana Khedoo, Samantha Banfield, Dylana Makarowski and Inari Moore.
It was the third consecutive loss for the Lady Jaguars in what was a rematch of the quarterfinal round in the 2020 edition [Haiti won 3-0], as a second half collapse sealed Guyana’s exit from the tournament.
Inari Moore gave the Guyanese the unexpected lead in the 37th minute, volleying a first time right footed effort into the back of the net from inside the six-yard area, after latching onto a cross from the left side of the field.
This lead remained unchanged at halftime.
However, two unanswered conversions in the second period by Maudeline Moryl and Valentina Ornis punched the Haitians ticket to the quarterfinal section.
A goalkeeping blunder led to the equalizer in the 58th minute, as a right sided corner-kick was misjudged by the advancing custodian O’Brien, allowing the awaiting Moryl to stab home from inside the six yard area into the back of the net.
Ornis then sealed the result in the 88th, following the intervention of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), as an initial strike from the top of the box, fell into her unchallenged path, before blasting the ball into the roof of the net from inside the right of the 18 yard area.
Although the eventual score might indicate a competitive engagement, the statistics illustrated a different image. In terms of attempts, the Haitians tallied 24, of which 8 found the target resulting in the eventual result. 4 corners was also the byproduct of Haiti’s attacking dominance. On the other side, Guyana could only muster five shots, with two efforts being on target. This lack of attacking quality only resulted in two corners.
Similarly, Haiti recorded 449 passes at a completion rate of 73%, which translated to an enormous 67% of possession. Guyana registered 33% of possession with 232 passes at a poor conversion rate of 41%.
Guyana ended the competition with a record of one win and three losses. The Lady Jaguars defeated Honduras [2-0], before also incurred defeats against Mexico [0-5] and Panama [0-5]. Guyana ended the 2020 edition with a record of two wins and three losses.
