Shemar Britton, the last remaining hope for an individual singles medal for Guyana at the ongoing 62nd annual Caribbean Table Tennis Championships was beaten yesterday.
After defeating Barbadian and former Caribbean men’s singles champion Kevin Farley in their round of 16 clash yesterday, Britton found the top seed Daniel Gonzalez of Puerto Rico a handful and lost 0-4.
Britton lost to Daniel Gonzalez of Puerto Rico 5-11, 11-13, 7-11, 6-11.
Earlier, Britton had gotten the better of fellow southpaw Farley in five games. After losing the first set 10-12, Britton won the next four 11-9, 11-5, 11-8, 12-10.
Britton’s counterpart Christopher Franklin, however lost 1-4 to Cuba’s Adrian Perez after being injured. The two split the first two sets with Perez taking the opening set 11-1 and Franklin responding with an 11-9 win.
Perez took the third 11-4 after which Franklin retired.
The Guyanese were also eliminated from the doubles competition which was held Sunday.
In the men’s doubles Franklin/Britton lost to Trinidad’s Derron Douglas and Aaron Wilson 8-11, 7-11, 11-7, 11-6, 7-11 while Jonathan Van Lange and Miguel Wong lost to Oscar Birrell/Richard Pietri of Puerto Rico 11-7, 11-8, 14-12.
In the women’s doubles competition Chelsea Edghill/ Natalie Cummings lost to Cuba’s Estela Crespo and Thalia de Armas Perez 5-11, 12-10, 5-11, 9-11 while in the mixed doubles competition Franklin/Cummings lost to Samuel Galvez and Eva Brito of the Dominican Republic 11-7, 7-11, 5-11, 5-11 and Britton/Edghill lost to Cuba’s Rene Mendez and Lizdainet Rodriguez 11-8, 10-12, 9-11, 8-11.
The men’s singles semifinals tomorrow will pit Gonzalez against Perez and Angel Naranjo against Jorge Campos while the women’s singles semis will see Cuba’s Idalys Lovett against Dominican Republic’s Eva Brito and Puerto Rico’s Daniely Rios against Cuba’s Daniela Fonseca Carrazana
