Eagles were crowned the Guyana Volleyball Federation 2022 Lenny Shuffler senior men’s volleyball champions after defeating Port Mourant Training Centre (PMTC) 3-2 in a five set thriller on Sunday.
Staged at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Homestretch Avenue, PMTC secured the first set 25-22 to take a 1-0 lead.
Eagles, though, responded in the second set by levelling proceedings, storming to a 25-21 win.
In front of the sizable viewership, Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the competitive encounter winning the pivotal third set, 25-22.
The Berbicians were not about to give up and after a 4-4 start of the fourth set, led 11-8. Although Eagles restored parity at 11-11 following a 3-0 exchange, PMTC once again seized control at 15-12 via a 4-1 run.
This lead was extended to 18-13 owing to a 3-1 blitz, before another 3-1 offensive charge further strengthened PMTC’s position at 21-14.
The dominant set for PMTC was sealed at 25-16 due to a 4-2 exchange, in the process setting up a climatic finish.
The opening exchanges in the fifth and final set failed to separate the teams, as several tied scores occurred at 2-2, 4-4, 5-5 and 6-6.
However, a 6-0 blitz from Eagles effectively broke the will of the PMTC outfit, and Eagles soared to a commanding 12-6 advantage in the 15 point set.
Although, PMTC briefly threatened with signs of a possible comeback at 13-10, the contest was essentially sealed at 15-10, following unanswered points.
Bartica finished third.
Adrian Moore of Eagles was adjudged the event’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) while teammate and Captain Dexter Hoppy copped the Best Setter prize.
