The Ramdhani siblings Narayan and Priyanna warmed up for the upcoming Pan Am badminton championships by winning medals at last weekend’s
Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference Badminton Championship (Provincials).
The event, which took place at the Olds College Auditorium saw Narayan winning a gold medal in the Open men’s singles while Priyanna gained a bronze medal in the Open women’s singles competition for Olds College.
“Narayan Ramdhani maintained his Athlete-of-the-Year Award and won gold for the King’s University in men’s singles,” a release from the Guyana Badminton Association stated.
The win was the second men’s single ACAC title for Narayan who defeated arch rival Smits Patel 21-18, 9-21 and 21-17 in the final.
En route to the final Narayan defeated Sivansh Shivansh 21-12, 21-18 and David Jay 21-12, 21-16 in the quarter-finals.
Priyanna reached the semi-finals of the women’s singles where she was defeated by Jasleen Kaur 16-21, 13-21.
She then gained a walk-over from Cecilia Wolski in the third place playoff.
She had earlier defeated
Makayla Basque 21-7, 21-9 and
Abbey Taylor, 21-8, 21-9 in the quarterfinals.
In the team event played on the first day, Priyanna carried her team Olds College to fourth place.
Olds College ended with five medals at the championship after Priyanna partnered with Abbey Taylor to win silver in the women’s doubles.
In the mixed doubles competition, Priyanna and Tye Belanger placed third.
Narayan and Priyanna are scheduled to represent Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) at Nationals (CCAA) March 17-19th before competing at the Pan Am individual championships in El Salvador from April 28 – May 01.
They will compete in singles and mixed doubles.
Meanwhile a memorial table and a moment of silence was observed for their father, the late Gokarn Ramdhani who died last year. Gokarn Ramdhani was
Head/Technical Coach at Olds College from 2019-2021.
Locally, the players will turn their attention to the annual Gumdac singles Easter tournament on April 1 & 2, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
