Shirley Hollingsworth, the pedestrian who was injured in the fatal accident on the Agricola Public Road just over a week ago, has succumbed to her injuries in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The death of Hollingsworth, 66, of Agricola Public Road, East Bank Demerara, which occurred last Friday, was confirmed by the Guyana Police Force’s spokesperson Stan Gouveia.
The February 28, 2022 accident initially resulted in the death of 24-year-old motorcyclist Nionel Berkeley, of Lot 58 East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, Georgetown.
According to the Guyana Police Force, the accident occurred at about 19:00 hours on the Agricola Public Road as Berkeley was riding his motorcycle home. He was proceeding north along the centre of the western carriageway when it is alleged that he struck Hollingsworth, who was crossing along the pedestrian crossing.
As a result of the impact, both the motorcyclist and the pedestrian fell onto the road surface and they suffered injuries about their bodies. The motorcyclist was picked up in an unconscious state and transported to the Georgetown Hospital by an ambulance and he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Hollingsworth was also picked up in an unconscious condition by public-spirited citizens and was taken to the hospital, where she was admitted in a critical state.
According to the police, Berkeley was not wearing a safety helmet at the time.
